Service Learning
Do you want to help others –– and expand your knowledge and skill set?
We'll help you make a difference with service learning opportunities around the world and right here at home.
Service learning differs from volunteer work, though both are valuable. Service learning couples rigorous academic content with community-based activities. You'll work with real people in real situations, and earn course credit, too.
We have provided funding and support to many faculty-led service learning initiatives across campus, including:
- Community Development in Belize: Students from across campus partner with the people of Dangriga, Belize to offer health screening and education, arrange for micro-finance loans for women-led businesses, provide clean water, and much more.
- Community Development in Mozambique: Agriculture, business and engineering students work together to aid a poultry farm outside Nampula, Mozambique that has created jobs and generated affordable protein that is severely lacking in the local diet.
- Health Coaches: Pre-professional health students partner with doctors, social workers and other health care professionals at Washington Regional Medical Center to help at-risk patients.
The Honors College is a founding partner in the new Service Learning initiative on campus. For more information, including a list of course offerings, visit the Service Learning website.
We are also exploring new partnerships with organizations like International Studies Abroad, which offers international service learning and spring break service learning opportunities. And we're very proud of students who have created their own service learning projects –– check out our photo essay on Arkansas Engineers Abroad, who brought clean water to the village of More Tomorrow, Belize.
